Makarajyothi with lakhs of pilgrims on the eastern horizon of Lord Ayyappa Temple during the auspicious time of the Deeparadhana after adorning the idol of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala with the Thiruvabharanam on Wednesday evening of 14th January 2009.

The pilgrims had the darshan of the star
(Makarajyothi) on the eastern sky at 6.40 pm and thereafter the darshan of the lord in
Thiruvabaranam. The whole place was echoed with
Saranam-Manthram and Devotional songs on "SWAMIYE SARANAM AYYAPPA".
Sannidhanam and nearby areas were jam packed with lakhs of pilgrims, majority of them belonging to the
Kerala's neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka an Andhra Pradesh, since Monday the 12th Jan for witnessing the Makarajyothi and the idol adorned with Thiruvabharanam.

TRADITIONAL RECEPTION OF THIRUVABHARANAM:
The Thiruvabharanam procession was given a traditional welcome on its arrival at Saramkuthi at 6.00 pm. by a team of Sabarimala Devaswom executive officers.
After the reception, the Thiruvabharanam team proceeded to the Sannidhanam where
TRAVANCORE DEVASWOM BOARD (TDB) members received them in front of the golden flag mast.
Later Thantri and Melsanthi received the Thiruvabharanam boxes in front of the Sreekovil and took those inside for Deeparadhana. When the sacred door is open for Deeparadhana, a star shines in the east horizon which arises only on the Makara Samkrama evening.
Thantri performed the Makarasamkrama pooja, the most auspicious time of the year, at 6.28 a.m. on Wednesday of 14th January. As part of the ritual, the thantri performed a special

Kalasabhishekam on the idol of Lord
